JAZZ apple begins British season with visit to National Fruit Show

JAZZ apple kicked off the British season in the best possible way, by taking centre stage at the National Fruit Show.

JAZZ apple kicked off the British season by taking centre stage at the National Fruit Show at Kent County Showground.

JAZZ apple growers, including John and David Hinchcliff, Robert Hinge, JL Baxter, Chandler & Dunn and Simon Bray, were in attendance at the show competing for prizes as well as visiting the JAZZ apple van.

The company said it has a long history of success at the National Fruit Show, winning the UK’s Tastiest Apple award eight times over the last decade, and this year was no different with the brand scooping a number of awards.

Kent-based Chandler & Dunn was the star of the show, collecting seven prizes on the day for their JAZZ apples. Its award-winning JAZZ apples will now be making their way for a special tasting at Buckingham Palace.

Long history of JAZZ apples

The National Fruit Show has been running for over 80 years, putting on the largest competitive display of commercially grown UK Soft and Top Fruit, as well as featuring a host of debates and presentations from leading figures in the industry and exhibition stands.

The history of Chandler & Dunn dates back to 1809, when Peter Chandler purchased 26 acres at Goldstone.

Over several generations, his family expanded the farm, with Mr GS Dunn joining the business in 1922.

Ten family members spanning three generations are actively involved in the business today, which provides them with a rich farming heritage and over 207 years of farming knowledge and hands-on experience.

Chandler & Dunn started growing JAZZ in 2006 with 7.5 hectares spread over three orchards, and since that time they have doubled their plantings of JAZZ and been at the forefront of the variety’s rise.

Charlie Dunn said: “I’m delighted to have scooped seven awards on the day, but I can’t take all the credit as I have a fantastic team alongside me working hard all year round to ensure we produce the best apples for consumers.

“I love growing JAZZ apples as they have such a consistent taste, texture and colour, and along with their great storability, it makes them the best apple around in my opinion.”
