Olly Harrison launches gin brand using honey from the farm

Merseyside farmer and influencer Olly Harrison recently launched his own brand of gin, made by Wrekin Spirit – with part of the proceeds going to charity.

Olly Harrison’s Agricontract gin launched just before Christmas and for every bottle sold, £1 will be donated to the Farming Community Network.

Two Agricontract gins are currently available, a London Dry Gin and Honey Gin, which is infused with honey made on Olly’s own farm.

Both gins are made and distributed by Wrekin Spirit in Shropshire, which is a farm diversification run by Sam Moseley at Sydney Farms Ltd.

Dilapidated shed to distillery

Fourth generation farmer Sam started the diversification four years ago when he returned to the 1,300-acre arable farm after studying Agriculture and Business at Aberystwyth University.

A dilapidated shed was turned into a distillery, and the business now makes a number of its own gins – as well as custom and charity gins. They also run distillery tours and the Gin School.

Farm-grown rhubarb, cherries and plums, as well as sloes from the hedges are used in the gins, which are mainly sold in farm shops or online.

The new partnership came about as a result of a chance encounter at the Cereals event, between Olly and fellow farmer Richard Moseley.

Initially, Olly was invited to Richard’s farm to see the willow being grown for biomass boilers. But later in the day he headed over to the Gin School and distillery for a tour, and to try making his own gin.

Olly’s gin recipes

The recipes for both gins were created by Olly and his partner Charlotte during their visit.

The London Dry Gin is a traditional, juniper forward dry gin with hints of orange peel, lemongrass and many other secret botanicals.

Meanwhile the Honey Gin has a traditional gin base with added natural sweetness – it’s infused with Simply Beeutiful Raw Honey.

Olly had been considering gin-making for a while, as he wanted to put the honey to good use. Feedback on the Agricontract gin has so far been very positive, with drinkers commenting that it’s sweet and doesn’t even need a mixer.

Farmers need support more than ever

Olly has become well-known for taking an active role in the ongoing protests against changes to inheritance tax.

The difficulties facing farmers, particularly in light of the recent Autumn Budget, is what prompted Olly to choose to donate £1 from every bottle of the gin sold to FCN.

FCN is a voluntary organisation and charity that supports farmers, farming families and people in rural communities through difficult times and periods of change.

“With everything that’s going on with the Budget and uncertainty at the moment, it’s needed more than ever,” Olly said.
