Suffolk New College awards recognised horticulture apprentice

A Suffolk New College student, Olivia Smith, has been named top horticulture apprentice of the year.
Suffolk New College celebrated top-performing apprentices during their annual awards ceremony this week.
The occasion took place at Chefs’ Whites restaurant in Ipswich and saw nine learners scoop accolades for their efforts in subject areas that ranged from engineering to electrical installation.
Olivia Smith, who works at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, said that she was very shocked to be recognised at the awards.
She added: “I thought I would learn more life skills by doing an apprenticeship as opposed to university and I chose horticulture because I’ve always liked being outdoors – and I really like the wellbeing side of nature.
“Long term, I want to continue to hone my horticulture skills, and I’d encourage others to choose an apprenticeship over uni just because it’s more practical and you are guaranteed skills and experience for trade jobs.”
Olivia also praised the college for being “incredibly supportive and encouraging”.
